Chapter 10

Lacey and I talked for hours that night, about last summer, the one before it, and the countless times we climbed the front steps at Carter Elementary. We reminisced about our first day in middle school and once we graduated to Jamison High.

We’ve always had each other’s back, and even though Lacey’s a three-hour drive away now, that’s never going to change. I’ve already made plans to drive up and see her next weekend once things calm down.

She texted me after she got in but hasn’t called since. It’s nearing the middle of the week, so I’m starting to worry.

Tucked between a set of shelves toward the back of the library, I pull out my phone to see if there are any messages I may have missed. Nothing. It doesn’t even say if she’s been online since we last spoke. Chewing my lip, I put the phone back in my pocket, then go about filing books where they belong.

Working at the library isn’t so bad once you get used to it. Granted, I don’t get to read as many books as I’d like, but as my co-worker Janie says, that isn’t why I’m here.

I smile when I come across one of the first fantasy novels Lacey and I ever read back when we were ten.

God, I remember how hard we had to beg my mom so we could take it out of the library. It wasn’t graphic or anything, but she honestly didn’t think we’d read it. Up until then, Lacey and I had stuck to authors like C. S. Lewis and Roald Dahl. You know, books like The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Matilda, The BFG, and James and the Giant Peach.

But this book is the first ‘doorstop’ we ever read. And we read the entire thing. It may have taken us a week, but every day after school, we’d sit in my backyard and read another chapter. Lacey read it because of the adventure, but I read it for the romance.

I place the book on the shelf, then run my fingers along its spine.

Janie pokes her head down my aisle and smiles once she joins me. “Oh, that’s a good one.”

“It was my first big book,” I say with a laugh. “Ended up reading the entire thing with my best friend.”

She offers me a sympathetic look. “Still no word from her, huh?”

I shake my head, then put another book on the shelf. “She’s probably busy,” I say, remembering all of the excuses Mom came up with last night.

That’s really what they were. Unless Lacey had a sudden case of amnesia, she could’ve called from another number. “Bad phone reception,” I add with a shrug.

“Or she hasn’t had her internet installed,” Janie offers, blowing a strand of auburn hair from in front of her eyes. “It doesn’t matter why she hasn’t called. You can’t keep sitting by the phone like a lovesick puppy-dog.”

She turns to me and stills my hand when I go to put another book on the shelf.
